Our Programs
Veteran Wellness
Military service can shape a person long after the uniform comes off.
K9 Companion Project plans to provide veteran-focused wellness support that recognizes the unique physical, emotional, and personal challenges that can accompany military service and the transition back into civilian life.
Veterans may have access to many of the same whole-person services offered throughout our program—including therapy, peer support, movement, mindfulness, nutrition education, complementary wellness services, and canine co-training—but with an added understanding of military culture, service-related experiences, chronic pain, trauma, loss, identity, and reintegration.
Whenever possible, we also hope to connect veterans with fellow veterans, knowledgeable providers, community resources, and assistance navigating available benefits and support systems.
Our goal is not to define veterans by what they have endured. It is to honor what they have carried, understand the experiences that shaped them, and help them build the next chapter with strength, connection, purpose, and a canine partner beside them.
Because those who served should never have to figure out what comes next alone.
Specific programs the K9 Companion Project provides include:
K-9 Matching
At K9 Companion Project, we believe the strongest partnerships can’t be forced—they have to be felt.
That’s why we do things differently. Rather than simply assigning a dog to a client, we allow our carefully evaluated rescue dogs to help choose their person. Clients spend time meeting and interacting with potential canine partners while our trainers observe the natural connections that begin to form.
Sometimes, a dog simply knows.
We look for the dog who seeks someone out, settles beside them, checks in with them, and shows the beginning of trust. From there, we evaluate temperament, lifestyle, physical needs, personality, and the specific tasks the dog may eventually perform.
Once the right connection is found, the dog and their person begin specialized co-training together—learning not only the skills of a service dog team, but how to communicate, trust, and grow together.
Because at K9 Companion Project, we aren’t just matching dogs with people. We’re helping two lives choose one journey.
Mindfulness / Yoga / Grounding Training
Healing is about more than learning commands. It is also about learning how to feel safe, present, and connected again.
As part of our whole-person approach, K9 Companion Project will incorporate mindfulness, gentle yoga, breathing exercises, and grounding techniques into the co-training experience. These practices are designed to help clients build calm, body awareness, emotional regulation, and confidence while strengthening the bond with their canine partner.
Dogs naturally respond to our energy, movement, and emotional state. By learning how to slow down, regulate stress, and stay present, clients also learn how to communicate more clearly with their dogs and become stronger, more connected teams.
This is not about perfect poses or meditation—it is about creating practical tools that can be used in everyday life when stress, anxiety, or overwhelm begin to take over.
Together, person and dog learn how to find their footing, reconnect with the moment, and move forward as a team.
Movement / Physical Therapy
Healing often begins with movement.
K9 Companion Project will incorporate movement and physical therapy support into our whole-person approach, helping clients improve strength, balance, mobility, coordination, and confidence at a pace that meets them where they are.
For individuals recovering from injury, trauma, chronic limitations, or periods of reduced activity, even small improvements in movement can make a meaningful difference in independence and quality of life. When appropriate, exercises and activities can also be integrated with the client’s canine partner, turning movement into a shared experience that builds motivation, trust, and teamwork.
Our goal is not simply to help someone move better—it is to help them feel more capable, more confident, and more connected to the life they want to live.
Step by step, person and dog move forward together.
Massage / Acupuncture / Chiropractic Care
Healing can be supported in many ways, and sometimes the body needs help releasing the stress, tension, and discomfort it has been carrying.
Through trusted wellness partners, K9 Companion Project plans to connect clients with supportive services such as therapeutic massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic care when appropriate. These complementary therapies may help promote relaxation, mobility, body awareness, and overall well-being while supporting each client’s broader care plan.
For individuals recovering from injury, living with physical limitations, or carrying the effects of prolonged stress and trauma, caring for the body can be an important part of rebuilding confidence and quality of life.
Our approach is never one-size-fits-all. Services are individualized, coordinated with appropriate healthcare professionals when needed, and designed to complement—not replace—traditional medical care.
Because healing is not just about where someone has been. It is about helping the whole person feel strong enough to move forward.
Group and Individual Therapy
Healing is deeply personal—but no one should have to navigate it alone.
K9 Companion Project plans to connect clients with both individual and group therapy opportunities led by qualified mental health professionals. Individual therapy can provide a private space to work through trauma, grief, anxiety, life transitions, and other personal challenges, while group therapy can offer the powerful reassurance of being understood by others who have walked similar paths.
When appropriate, a client’s canine partner may also become part of the healing process, helping create a greater sense of safety, connection, emotional awareness, and confidence.
Our goal is to create supportive spaces where clients can be heard without judgment, build practical coping skills, strengthen relationships, and rediscover hope and purpose.
Sometimes healing happens quietly, one conversation at a time. Sometimes it happens when we realize we are not walking the journey alone.
Therapeutic Gardening
Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as putting your hands in the soil.
K9 Companion Project plans to incorporate therapeutic gardening as a way to help clients slow down, reconnect with the present moment, and experience the quiet satisfaction of nurturing something and watching it grow.
Gardening can support mindfulness, gentle movement, routine, patience, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose. For individuals navigating trauma, stress, grief, disability, or major life changes, tending a garden can create a peaceful space to focus, reflect, and reconnect with both themselves and the world around them.
When appropriate, canine partners can be part of that experience too—sharing time outdoors, practicing calm behaviors, and strengthening the bond between dog and person in a natural setting.
Whether planting herbs, vegetables, flowers, or simply spending time in the garden, the goal is the same: to create meaningful moments of connection, accomplishment, and growth.
Because sometimes, as we care for something living, we begin to grow again too.
Nutritional Therapy and Education
What we put into our bodies can play a meaningful role in how we feel, heal, and function every day.
K9 Companion Project plans to incorporate nutrition therapy and practical healthy-eating education to help clients better understand how food choices can support energy, strength, recovery, focus, and overall well-being. When appropriate, clients may be connected with qualified nutrition professionals who can provide individualized guidance based on their unique needs and goals.
Just as important, we want healthy eating to feel realistic—not complicated, restrictive, or out of reach. Education may include meal planning, grocery shopping, reading food labels, preparing simple nutritious meals, understanding portion balance, and learning how to make healthier choices on a budget.
For individuals rebuilding routines after trauma, illness, injury, or major life changes, learning how to nourish the body can become another powerful step toward independence and self-care.
Our goal is not perfection. It is knowledge, confidence, and sustainable choices that help people feel stronger and live better.
Because healing is supported not only by what surrounds us, but also by how we nourish ourselves from within.
Peer Support
Sometimes the most powerful support comes from someone who truly understands the road you have walked.
K9 Companion Project plans to create opportunities for clients to connect with peers who share similar experiences, challenges, and transitions. Whether someone is navigating trauma, recovery, disability, military or first-responder service, grief, or a major life change, peer support can provide something uniquely valuable: connection without explanation.
These relationships can offer encouragement, accountability, practical insight, and the simple reassurance that no one has to carry everything alone.
As clients grow alongside their canine partners, peer support can also help build a stronger sense of community—one rooted in trust, shared experience, purpose, and mutual respect.
Because healing is not only about becoming stronger on your own. Sometimes it is about finding people who will walk beside you while you get there.
Life Skills & Financial Wellness
Rebuilding a life often means rebuilding the everyday systems that help life feel manageable again.
Through our partnership with Clear Lake Financial, K9 Companion Project plans to provide practical life-skills and financial wellness education designed to help clients create greater stability, confidence, and independence.
Education may include budgeting, organizing household finances, understanding credit, managing bills, planning for expenses, setting realistic financial goals, and developing simple systems that make day-to-day responsibilities easier to manage. Clients may also receive guidance on household planning, financial organization, and connecting with additional professional resources when more specialized assistance is needed.
For someone recovering from trauma, injury, disability, job loss, or another major life transition, financial stress can quickly become another barrier to healing. Our goal is to replace confusion and overwhelm with knowledge, practical tools, and a plan clients can actually use.
This is not about wealth or having everything figured out. It is about learning how to take control of the pieces you can, one decision at a time.
Because greater stability creates room for something equally important: the freedom to focus on healing, purpose, and moving forward.
Sleep and Restorative Wellness Education
Rest is not a luxury—it is an essential part of healing.
K9 Companion Project plans to provide practical education and support around healthy sleep habits, restorative routines, stress reduction, and creating environments that promote better rest. For individuals living with trauma, anxiety, chronic pain, disrupted schedules, or major life transitions, quality sleep can be difficult to achieve and can affect nearly every part of daily life.
Clients can learn simple, realistic strategies to improve bedtime routines, reduce overstimulation, create more consistent sleep patterns, and better understand how rest supports mood, focus, physical recovery, and overall wellness.
When appropriate, a canine partner may also become part of a healthy nighttime routine by providing comfort, structure, grounding, and a reassuring presence.
Our goal is to help clients build habits that support deeper rest, better recovery, and greater resilience during the day.
Because healing does not only happen while we are moving forward. Sometimes, it begins when the body finally has permission to rest.
Adaptive Recreation & Community Reintegration
Healing also happens when people begin feeling comfortable participating in life again.
K9 Companion Project plans to offer adaptive recreation and community reintegration opportunities that help clients rebuild confidence, independence, social connection, and a sense of adventure in supportive, real-world settings.
Activities may include walking groups, fishing, nature outings, community events, adaptive sports, recreational activities, and other experiences designed to meet clients where they are physically and emotionally. Whenever appropriate, canine partners can participate alongside their person, helping teams practice skills, navigate public environments, and strengthen trust outside of formal training.
For someone recovering from trauma, injury, disability, or prolonged isolation, returning to familiar activities—or discovering new ones—can be an important step toward reclaiming confidence and identity.
Our goal is not simply to get people out of the house. It is to help them reconnect with community, rediscover joy, and build the confidence to participate fully in the world around them.
Because moving forward is about more than recovery. It is about getting back to living.
